For ages we've had a 1 litre 2 door Fiesta, that doesn't really cut it when you're trying to transport two kids around. So far, Maria and I have disagreed about what car to get. I'd like a large engined super saloon and she'd like something much smaller. She likes the Lexus CT 200h that Kylie advertises, but I can't stand it (and it's about £25,000). She likes the BMW 1 series, which I kind of like, but both those cars are small. They're not much bigger than the Fiesta!
If you had a budget of, say, £15,000 - what would you go for? Any suggestions?
I'm thinking that if I dump the idea of a super saloon (and I'm talking Mercedes E55 AMG / E63 AMG / C55 AMG, BMW M5 / M3 etc), I might be able to convince Maria that a Range Rover is a good idea. Strangely, Maria has always liked big people carriers - I don't know why, because they're huge and difficult to park!
The good news is you can pick up a 2005-ish Range Rover 4.2 V8 supercharged Vogue SE with every option in the book for around £15,000. Now that sounds like fun and good value for money! Although not sure about the running costs. I don't think I'll be able to persuade her, though!
I agree, Doc J, the Nissan Note would be a sensible choice of car and excellent fuel economy.
I don't need a 4.2 litre V8, you're absolutely right. I just have this hankering for something that is actually fun to drive. Having said that, James May on Top Gear at the weekend reviewed the Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nurburgring edition and updated Fiat Panda. He actually thought the much cheaper Fiat Panda was a far more exciting car to drive than the Corsa. So, there you go. If he's right, you don't need a huge V8 to have some fun. And, certainly, a 4.2 litre V8 is probably not best suited to the school run!
Surely the Stag is more fun than you could ever handle.
Be practical and get a car with wipe clean vomit proof seats and good fuel economy. At the end of the day, when you are going on holiday cruising down the motorway at 80mph, would you rather be getting 40mpg or 20mpg.
Or is there something in the CR8 Resident Charter that restricts the brands of car that are allowed to be purchased.
Yes, the Stag is good fun! And so I think the best thing is to stick with the Stag and buy a sensible car to replace the Fiesta - something that does 40+ mpg. I've spoken to Maria and I think we will continue with the Fiesta for a little bit longer, so we can get some jobs done on the house first.
