How I spent my weekend - fixing a security light to the back of our house

Here's how I fitted a security light to the back of our house. Now we have a complete set of 4 dusk to dawn lights fitted - one on the front of our house, two on the side and one on the back.

  • Inside of lounge before light goes up Inside of lounge before light goes up Here's the wall before any chasing.
  • Back wall of house before light goes up Back wall of house before light goes up Security light will be fixed on back of house between kitchen and lounge.
  • Drilling at an angle of 45 degrees Drilling at an angle of 45 degrees Light will be placed on back wall of Kitchen, but the best place to pick up power is in the lounge - hence the 45 degrees drilling angle.
  • And we're through And we're through I needed a 12 x 600mm drill bit to get all the way through the wall.
  • Light on wall Light on wall A couple of 6mm holes and a spirit level is all that's needed to mount the light on the wall.
  • Electrical connections in place Electrical connections in place A close up of the electrical connections.
  • Another shot of the internals of the security light Another shot of the internals of the security light Hopefully the light looks straight on the wall. All electrical connections are in place.
  • Front cover on light Front cover on light With the front cover on the light, things are starting to look good. Now, back inside the house...
  • Chasing of lounge wall Chasing of lounge wall It took a while to chisel out the channel for the conduit which will contain the wiring for the light.
  • Powering up the light Powering up the light A junction box already existed under the floor with a single spur to power an outside electrical socket. I changed the junction box for a modern day equivalent and added another spur for the security light.
  • Back box and switch in place Back box and switch in place The back box is secured in place and two lengths of conduit (above and below the back box) protect the cable. A fused MK switch is finally wired up.
  • The chased wall with all components in place The chased wall with all components in place A view of the chased wall and the mounted switch.
  • Close up of MK fused switch Close up of MK fused switch Here's a close up of the switch that will supply power to the security light.
  • Does it work? Does it work? Yes, it works! When the photoresistor is covered, the light turns on.
  • A final check A final check As dusk approaches, the light switches on automatically. Job done!
